The meeting was chaired by Mr. Yao Xin, Secretary-General of ODCCN. Opening remarks were delivered by Mr. Cui Gang, former Deputy Director of the Standardization Administration of China (SAC), and Mr. Liu Guangwei, Chairman of the Beijing Shiology Research Institute and Director of the Research Center for Shiology at Renmin University of China.Discussions at the meeting centered on the significance of Shiology and the pathway toward its standardization. Participants explored how the Shiology — Concepts and Frameworks standard could serve as a practical tool to address pressing global challenges such as hunger, public health, and food waste.

In his opening speech, Mr. Cui Gang emphasized that Shiology, as an emerging body of knowledge developed by Chinese scholars, holds significant potential for optimizing food resources worldwide. He stressed that international standardization is a critical step in promoting both the global dissemination and practical application of Shiology, and praised the ODCCN team’s efforts, calling the task “challenging and far-reaching.” He noted that this endeavor represents a historic contribution to the advancement of global well-being and the modernization of food systems.

Mr. Liu Guangwei expressed his appreciation to the participating experts and delivered a comprehensive analysis of the current global food system challenges. He underscored the need for a coherent and systematic knowledge framework to resolve these issues, stating that Shiology offers such a solution by integrating the concepts of eaters, food, and shi-order, thus encompassing the entire food system chain.

Key Outcomes of the Meeting

1.The construction and release of the Shiology international standard will be accelerated.

2.The regular expert discussion will be held to facilitate the exchange of experiences.

3.As the first international standardization project based on Shiology, this initiative marks a practical application of Chinese academic innovation in global governance. By establishing a standardized Shiology framework, the project will support progress toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and promote the emergence of a healthier, more equitable, and sustainable global food system.

The next phase of the project will continue with the European Expert Group Meeting, scheduled to be held in Paris, France, on July 17, to further advance the development and international promotion of the Shiology standard.

The meeting was chaired by Mr. Yao Xin, Secretary-General of ODCCN. At the beginning of the meeting, Secretary-General Yao Xin elaborated on the core value and practical significance of the international standard "Shiology — Concepts and Frameworks". He pointed out that the formulation of this standard aims to build an interdisciplinary knowledge system integrating food, eaters, and shiance order, providing a unified conceptual reference and framework guidance for the sustainable development of global food systems. It plays an important foundational role in promoting exchanges and cooperation in the international shiology field.

Subsequently, Liu Jiping, a member of the drafting team, explained the handling of comments on the standard. She mentioned that on May 28th, ODCCN had organized an Asian expert group meeting on "Shiology — Concepts and Frameworks", focusing on the construction of the framework structure of the international standard for shiology. Experts put forward many constructive suggestions on key issues such as the overall framework design of the standard, the refinement and accuracy of concept definitions, the optimization of term classification, and the practicality of the standard system. The drafting team systematically sorted out, in-depth discussed, and targeted handled all the comments, laying a solid foundation for the discussions of this meeting.

During the expert discussion session, scholars from various countries, combining their own research fields and regional cultural backgrounds, put forward detailed and targeted opinions on the draft of "Shiology — Concepts and Frameworks", providing multiple perspectives for the optimization of the standard.

The participating experts agreed that the formulation of the international standard "Shiology — Concepts and Frameworks" is a pioneering work, which needs to fully absorb global diverse wisdom and balance academic rigor and practical guidance.

The convening of this seminar injected new ideas and momentum into the refinement of the international standard Shiology — Concepts and Frameworks moving forward, the drafting group will incorporate the feedback from this discussion to revise and improve the draft. Further seminars will be held in early September and early October to build broader consensus. The standard is scheduled to be officially released at the 5th World Shiology Forum in October 2025, aiming to promote the standardized development of Shiology worldwide.

Advancing Global Food Knowledge through Standards — ODCCN at the 5th World Shiology Forum

On October 29, the Organization for Trade Development and Standards Cooperation (ODCCN) participated in the 5th World Shiology Forum held in Haikou, Hainan Province, China — an event that brought together experts and leaders from 115 countries to explore innovative pathways toward sustainable global food systems.

In his written message to the Forum, UN Secretary-General António Guterres noted that the holistic principles of Shiology point the way toward human coexistence. Only by recognizing the interdependence among societies, ecosystems, and economies can we cultivate resilience amid crises and unity amid diversity.

Former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also emphasized that food systems are deeply complex, and we need an integrated body of knowledge that spans the entire system. Shiology provides exactly such a foundation.

Food issues lie at the heart of global governance, touching on 13 of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is in this context that ODCCN/PAS 2:2025 — Concepts and Frameworks of Shiology (Integrated Knowledge System of Food, Eaters, and Shi-order) was developed, providing the world’s first standardized framework for understanding the interconnections among food, eaters, and the broader order of sustainable human development.

During the Forum, the ODCCN Secretary-General Jack XIN YAO joined distinguished experts — including Tom Heilandt, former Secretary of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (FAO/WHO) — to witness the official release of this landmark document.

The standard integrates insights from agronomy, nutrition, medicine, and social sciences, fostering interdisciplinary research, reducing conceptual ambiguity, and strengthening global cooperation toward the UN SDGs.

As a global organization dedicated to trade development and standard cooperation, ODCCN remains committed to creating scientific, inclusive, and forward-looking standards that drive knowledge sharing, remove trade barriers, and contribute to a fairer, healthier, and more sustainable world.
